It is with great sadness that Hertfordshire County Netball Association report on the loss of one of their highly valued Hertfordshire County Life Members, Maureen Ball.

Maureen was President and Founder of Turnford Netball Club and a strong force within the netball world and indeed formed most of the local leagues that run today.  In 1958 Maureen Ball founded the Oakwood Netball Club; in 1967 Maureen formed Turnford Netball Club which is a gold caps accredited club with almost 300 members.  In 1970 Maureen formed the Turnford Summer Netball League and in 1975 Maureen formed the Turnford Junior Summer League.

From 1979 to 1982 Maureen was appointed Hertfordshire’s U18 County Coach.  In 1980 Maureen formed the Turnford Winter League and in 1981 Maureen formed the Broxbourne and District Netball League.  In 2000 Maureen formed the ‘Back to Netball’ sessions having successfully applied for a millennium grant.

By being proactive, Maureen, with the help of her Committee, progressed the High5 Turnford Junior League (for both boys and girls between the ages of 8 to 11) from just 5 teams to this year making 81 teams – giving more young people the chance to play sport.

Turnford has an extremely strong Committee that has been headed by Maureen over a number of years. She has instilled a great sense of dedication and pride and Carole Titmuss of Turnford Netball Club has said: “I truly believe this is why Turnford are such a strong and committed club.  It is without doubt that Maureen’s legacy will live on.”

Anne Miles, past President of Hertfordshire County, has said that “Maureen did a tremendous amount for the County as the Publicity Officer, getting accounts into the papers and taking excellent photographs of games as well as all the work in establishing Turnford as a very thriving club encouraging players of all ages, umpires and coaches as well as a good support team, and she also established the Turnford League. She worked so hard with the council to get the courts and associated building and was well respected by the Borough of Broxbourne.”

The attached picture shows Maureen holding her Hertfordshire Services to Sport Award, a much deserved award indeed.  Maureen will be greatly missed by all of us in the Hertfordshire netball community.

In case you are able to attend and pay your respects: Maureen’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, 9th May at Woollensbrook Crematorium, Hertford Road, Hoddesdon, EN11 9BN at 12noon.  It has been requested by Maureen’s family that donations are sent to Turnford Netball Club to be used for the specific purpose of building a netball pavilion at The Broxbourne School.  Maureen led talks with The Broxbourne School for their new sports facility to be the home of Turnford Netball Club, and a pavilion at the new home ground will be wonderful testament to all Maureen has achieved for netball.

Maureen Ball, RIP.  We will miss you.
